Helpful Tips

On behalf of the students and faculty of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the GSA would like to take this opportunity to welcome you toCornell University and the department. Below you will find some tips and useful information on registration. This is not a comprehensive list but should serve as a starting place for some of the tasks you will need to take care of in your first days at Cornell.

Tips:

You can obtain keys to the buildings and offices from Lisa Bishop-Oltz in room 16. There is a $5 deposit for each key. Lisa is an important person to know, as she handles paperwork for DNR graduate students, and for our Director of Graduate Studies.

If you need help with housing, don't be shy to ask one of the GSA officers. You can also check out Cornell's housing website containing up to date information on housing listings both on and off campus.

If you have a photo of yourself, bring it with you to any of the events so we can update our graduate student photo board. Pictures should be 3 x 5 in color, casual, and suitable for public display. Failure to provide a photo may result in having one of us shoot your picture at a less-than-photogenic moment.

Be sure to meet with your advisor and determine your duties to meet the requirements of your financial aid. This is an important time for the two of you to match up expectations and goals for the next few months and years.

Eduardo Carrillo-Rubio is our desk czar this year; please email him at ec278@cornell.edu about your desk needs. You should first discuss your office space needs with your advisor and then let Beth know what you need. Keep in mind that desk space is often limited. If you don't have access to email, please see Beth at the pizza lunch August 24th about desk assignments.

Sometime before school begins you should say hello to Dr. Marianne Krasny, the Director or Graduate Studies. She can be found in Fernow 18.

Contact Dan Bogan dab93@cornell.edu, to be placed on the GSA list serve. The list serve will provide information regarding department seminars, meetings, social events, etc.

At registration, be sure to sign up for a workshop that introduces you to computing at Cornell. You can get your network ID by taking this workshop. This allows you to tap into an extensive computer system linking many of Cornell's services including the library, administrative information, and electronic mail. Sign up for this early because the workshops fill up quickly.
